WD My Passport 500GB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive Review

Final Thoughts
When it comes down to it the WD My Passport drive is a great choice for someone looking for portable storage that they can easily backup their system with.  We reviewed the 500GB version, but the fact that you can get this drive in capacities up to 2TB is just great.  2TB in your pocket? I’m sold!  And since this is a portable drive you don’t have to worry about carrying around a power cable or adapter.

The drive really does look sleek.  We received the white version, but there is a choice is black, blue, red and grey which does give you some options.  The included software is extremely easy to use and comes on the drive, so not installing off a CD or having to download anything.  The software allows you to secure the entire drive with a password, set backups and run a few tests.

The speeds on the drive were good, we averaged around 80-90MB/s in all of our tests.  This means your data transfers are going to go pretty quickly and watching HD movies from the drive should not be an issue at all.  Remember if a USB 3.0 connection is not available the drive is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 as well.

If you are looking for a portable drive or an easy backup solution I can totally recommend the My Passport drive.  I did not encounter a single issue while testing it.  Right now the 500GB version of the My Passport drive is selling for $79.99 at my favorite online retailer.  WD also backs this drive with a 2 year warranty.  Overall ThinkComputers gives the WD My Passport 500GB USB 3.0 Portable Hard drive a 9 out of 10 score and our Recommended Award!
