Synology DiskStation DS216+ NAS Review

Synology DS216+ NAS Overview
Taking a first look at the DS216+ you can see that Synology has gone all black. So you have a black main chassis and a black front cover. The unit has the official dimensions of 165 mm x 108 mm x 233.2 mm so it should easily fit on your desk or in your network setup.

Starting at the front of the unit we have that black front cover. It can be removed to get in at your drives, which we will show you in a little bit. On the right side of the unit you have activity LEDs for status, LAN, disk 1 and disk 2. Below that you have a USB 3.0 port, USB copy button, and power button. It is nice that there is a front USB port and the USB copy button, this makes USB transfers fast and easy.

Moving around back there is a large 92 mm cooling fan to keep your drives inside nice and cool. Below that you have two USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet port, eSATA port, power connection, and Kensington lock port. Having the two USB 2.0 ports in the back mean you can connect a printer, USB WiFi dongle, or more storage.

The side of the unit is actually pretty cool as it has the Synology logo engraved on the side. These openings double as ventilation holes for your drives.

Moving back to the front of the drive the front cover pops off quite easily. This reveals two pull-out hard drive trays. Each of these trays support both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch hard drives. 3.5-inch hard drive installation will be tool-less, while 2.5-inch hard drive installation requires the included screws.
