Scythe Mugen 5 CPU Cooler Review

Scythe is a company we’ve been covering for a while now and they make some of the best air-cooled CPU coolers out there. We consider them right at the top with Noctua and Cryorig in that regard. Today we are checking out one of their larger cooler in the Mugen 5. It has a single tower heatsink design with six large copper heatpipes and a 120 mm cooling fan. The actual heatsink of the cooler is quite larger as the heatsink fins are almost double the size of what we typically see these days. Will this cooler be able to match some of the top air CPU coolers we’ve tested in the past? Read on as we find out!

Special thanks to Scythe for providing us with the Mugen 5 CPU Cooler to review.

On one side of the box all of the main features are listed and detailed with photos. On the opposite side you will find a full overview of the cooler with dimension and a full list of specifications. So if you were looking at this cooler at say Micro Center you should have more than enough information to make your purchase.

Getting everything out of the box you have the main heatsink, cooling fan, mounting hardware for both AMD and Intel, thermal paste, a screwdriver, and installation instructions. This version of the cooler does not come with AM4 mounting hardware, but you can request it from Scythe, or you can get the Rev.B version of the cooler which comes with it included.

About 10 years of computer experience. Been messing around with electronics since I was 5, got into computers when I was in highschool, been modding them ever since then. Very interested in how things work and their design.
  • Does this support TR4 socket for the new Ryzen Threadripper processors from AMD?

  • Net

This is a great cooler as you have found. I will only note that on the Asus Crosshair Hero VI (designed for Ryzen) the Mugen 5 cooler fins have an approx 1mm interference with any card you put in the nearest PCIe (x1) slot. It’s enough to push the card a little sideways, and will require a very thin piece of plastic to be wedged between the card and the fins to prevent electrical shorts.

I would still buy the cooler again, because this isn’t a big deal, but be aware of the issue.
