SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD Review

Final Thoughts
When it comes to portable solid state drives there are a few things you want to consider. Of course the most important is speed. You don’t want to be waiting forever for files to transfer or waiting for footage to render in Adobe Premiere. Well the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD definitely has you covered there, it is one of the fastest portable solid state drives we’ve tested. It scored either number 1 or number 2 out of the 5 dives we tested, only falling short to the Samsung SSD T5 in a few tests. This drive is more than fast enough to off-load photos / video to and to use as a drive for 4K video editing.

The next big thing is protection. Being a portable drive you are going to be throwing this drive into a backpack, laptop bag, or even in your pocket. Being that this is a solid state drive there are no moving parts, so dropping the drive really is not a big issue. The drive has a semi-rugged design with IP55 dust and water protection. That means that it will be able to survive small splashes etc. I like this, although there is no cover on the USB-C connection, which could be damaged if it got really wet. Keep in mind though that SanDisk does not market this drive as a waterproof or super rugged.

Finally we have size and portability. This drive is very small! With official dimensions of 1.95 x 3.79 x 0.35 inches it can easily be carried around in your pocket, so it is not going to take up a lot of space inside your laptop bag or backpack. The drive is also designed so you could possibly connect it to a key ring, carabiner, or lanyard.

SanDisk also loads the drive with their SecureAccess software, which provides 128-bit AES protection of your files. The drive is also backed with a 3-year warranty. Right now the 1TB version, which we reviewed today is selling at our favorite online retailer for $312.99.
