Reference AMD Radeon R9 290X Disassembled

Expreview decided to go in quite some detail with the HIS-branded AMD reference design Radeon R9 290X graphics card as it was taken apart piece by piece for a review which predominantly revealed the specs and the features. This detaching was done to reveal some of the major components and features such as the cooling system, the PCB, the VRM, and one of the most highlighted of all, the all new 28 nm “Hawaii” silicon.

Some details regarding this reference design of the graphics card was revealed earlier in September but it was a much blurred version of what we have now. More pictures can be viewed on the web page now. The cooing solution is somewhat similar to what you expect from a contemporary AMD. The copper plates of this cooling solution covers all critical areas of the GPU, memory, and VRM areas, aluminium channels, and a lateral-flow fan.

Some of the best quality and highly advanced components have been featured on the PCB. These include the 7.08 billion-transistor chip from AMD which has grabbed some attention lately and on the observe side are featured 16 chips of GDDR5 memory. Along with this, there is the 5+1+1 phase VRM, which uses CPL-made chokes, IR-made DirectFETs, and a new IR-made VRM controller.
