Our tech-centric world: things that technology and computers have revolutionized

It is so hard to believe that the technological revolution has taken off to the extent to which it has. I remember in the early 90s when mobile phones were not yet common; the company my father worked for gave him one. It was as heavy as a brick, with an aerial. My mother picked it up, and scoffed “These things are ridiculous! They are bulky and heavy. This will never take off. No one wants to be contactable all of the time, anyway!” And how wrong she was! We now live in a world where mobile phones are the norm (and way slimmer than their original designs!), and kids can work an iPad before they are out of diapers! Things have changed a lot in the past few decades. Here are a list of the top aspects of our lives that have been revolutionized by modern technology.

Bonus tip: If you have downloaded a video and want to send it to a friend, there is an online file-sharing service, FileWhopper. It will let you transfer files and folders of any size quickly and securely.

Entertainment
Gone are the days when you had to get up, dressed and drive about to get what you need to be sufficiently entertained. No more dragging yourself to the video store to get a movie to watch. Now we have Netflix. Want to read a book? No need to drive to the bookstore or the library; just buy the eBook for your Kindle online. When you get a hankering to bet on your favorite sports team, you do not need to drive all the way to your local racetrack or bookie. Nowadays you have the convenience of being able to find top bookies online, with the click of a button! When placing bets with online bookmakers, you will also often get given free bets as a new member of the site. Now that is something your in-person bookie is not likely to give you!

Shopping
While shopping can be fun for some, for most it is a drag. Thank goodness you can now buy almost anything your little heart desires online! From eBay to Amazon to etsy, there are so many online shopping malls. Most of your favorite clothing and household appliance stores will also have online shops too nowadays. So whether you are buying a new toaster, or need birthday present for your aunt, you do not need to spend hours walking around a mall anymore.

Communication
Do you remember the days of international phone cards? I do! The high cost of international phone calls is hardly an issue anymore. You can video chat on Skype or Face Time, you can phone on various apps such as Viber, Whatsapp or the Messenger app. There are so many options to keep you in contact with those you love –no matter where in the world they are. So long as you have a good data plan, or have Wi-Fi, you are good to go!

Banking
I know this may seem like an odd addition to the list, but believe me: it is not! Standing in long bank lines has got to be the bane of many people’s existence! Internet banking has made business and personal transactions substantially easier and more convenient too. Transferring money to another account has never been easier. And if that is not good enough, most banks’ internet banking services also allow you to do other things like buy data or minutes for your mobile phone.
