NVIDIA Moving to 16nm TSMC FinFET Process

It looks like TSMC is ready to move to volume production on their 16 nm FinFET process. Based on a recent report we know that NVIDIA is joining them. Does that mean that NVIDIA is skipping the 20 nm fab process completely?

TSMC’s 16 nm FinFET process has passed full reliability qualification. Nearly 60 customer designs are currently scheduled to tape out by the end of 2015, one which will be NVIDIA. TSMC is expected to move the node to volume production around July 2015. Some companies that will be using the 16 nm FinFET process include Avago Technologies, Freescale, LG Electronics, MediaTek, Nvidia, Renesas Electronics and Xilin.

It is interesting that AMD is not on this list. Expect 16 nm FinFET GPUs by Q3 of 2015. We remind you that current GPUs are based on a 28 nm process so the step forward will be pretty big!
