NVIDIA Announces The GeForce GTX 1080/1070

NVIDIA held a special event Friday where they announced the GeForce GTX 1080 and GeForce GTX 1070 graphics cards. These two new cards are based on the GP104 silicon and manufactured on the 16nm FinFET fabrication process. These two cards are the first cards in the “Pascal for Gamers” line or the “GeForce 1000 Series”.

The GeForce GTX 1080 of course is the higher-end card. The GTX 1080 has 2560 CUDA cores. The base clock is 1607 MHz with a GPU boost up to 1733 MHz. The card gets power from a single 8pin PCI-Express power connector and its thermal design power is 180W.

The card features 8GB of Micron’s new GDDR5X memory. GDDR5X will give more power to the GPU by enabling higher frequencies. That means higher bandwidth through higher frequencies. The GDDR5X on this card is running at 2500 MHz or 10 GHz (GDDR5X-effective). That gives you a memory bandwidth of 320 GB/s.

You have 5 display outputs, which include 3 DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0B, and DVI.

As far as performance goes the GTX 1080 is faster than both the GeForce GTX 980 SLI and Titan X. NVIDIA is saying 2x performance and 3x efficiency compared to the Titan X.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 will have an MSRP of $599 USD. There is also a Founders Edition (reference cooler & higher binned chip) which will cost $699. The card will be available May 27th.

NVIDIA also announced the GeForce GTX 1070, which is based off of the GP104-200 GPU that is built on the 16nm FinFET architecture. The card will also feature 8GB of memory, but unlike the GeForce GTX 1080, it will be GDDR5, not GDDR5X.

NVIDIA has not yet released detailed information on the GeForce GTX 1070. They have only said that it has 6.5 TFLOPs performance, which is still faster than a Titan X. If we assume it has similar clocks to the GeForce GTX 1080 then it should have around 2048 CUDA cores.

The card will be available June 10th for $379 USD, there will also be a Founders Edition for $449.
