Noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4 CPU Cooler Review

Noctua makes some of the best air CPU coolers out there. We know this because we’ve tested many of their coolers over the years. With AMD’s Ryzen launch we were brought a new socket (AM4) so Noctua decided to release three Special Edition coolers just for it. These include the NH-D15 SE-AM4, NH-U12S SE-AM4, and NH-L9x65 SE-AM4. We actually have all three coolers on hand, but will be testing the NH-D15 SE-AM4 first. This cooler has a dual-tower, dual-fan design featuring six copper heatpipes, two NF-A15 140mm fans, and Noctua’s SecuFirm2 mounting system so installation should be pretty easy. Let’s see what this cooler is all about!

Special thanks to Noctua for providing us with the NH-D15 SE-AM4 CPU Cooler to review.

Packaging
Noctua has kept their same packaging we know them for on these new coolers. The only real change is that there is a “Special Edition for AMD AM4” on the box. As always the box is very informative and gives you all of the information you need to make your purchase at the store.

Getting everything out of the box you actually find three smaller boxes inside. These include a box with the NH-D15 heatsink with single fan attached, a box with a second NF-A15 fan, and a third box with your accessories and the mounting hardware.

About 10 years of computer experience. Been messing around with electronics since I was 5, got into computers when I was in highschool, been modding them ever since then. Very interested in how things work and their design.

40 degrees at 100% load?? Is this 40 over ambient or just the actual temperature of the CPU being 40? If it’s the latter, what’s the ambient temperature?

I know AMD uses some sweet thermal compound between the CPU and the heatspreader. But this seems absolutely crazy. An 8 core CPU at 40 degrees at full load.

First on the list would be to spray paint those fugly fans with a better color.

I have an R7 1700. At stock, maximum all core clock speeds are only 3.2GHz, and my Noctua U14S does similar temperatures. Overclocked to 3.8GHz all cores, the temperatures do push the high 60s.

do not forget the temperature offset used by many Ryzen CPU (1800x-1700x) unless you have a program reading the proper temperature AMD did state the temps are actually reported as 20c higher from the factory

Either way ~60c fully loaded all cores is actually not bad though I would expect better from a noctua unit, but still much better then many Intel higher end core i chips let alone previous bulldozer/piledriver chips hitting in the 70-80s 😀

Man those fans are fugly bastards. Might be one of the best coolers. Wont win any color contests. Noctua needs to switch all fans colors over like the NF-F12 iPPC-3000. Beautiful.
