LaCie D2 Safe 1TB External Hard Drive Review

Software and Testing

Before you go ahead and plug the drive in you want to install the software that is included on the CD. First is the SAFE hard drive software, it will help you create user profiles. You can have up to 5 different user profiles each configured as an administrator or just to have read and write or read only access.

Once you have input a user name you can go ahead and input your fingerprints. The software requires you to register at least 2 different fingerprints per user. You can select from any finger on either of your hands. Once you select your finger you can go ahead and swipe that finger 3 times to register it. Once you have your 2 fingerprints registered the software will unlock the drive and make it available for use.

So if you want to use the drive with multiple computers you will need to install the software on each system or the drive will not show up. When plugged into a new computer the drive will ask you to input your fingerprint. When you save files to the drive they are encrypted on the fly so only authorized users can access them.

The drive also comes with backup software. It allows you to select folders that will back up when you want them to. This makes it easy when you need to back up quite a few different folders. You just set them up in the program and you are good to go.

To test the drive I used HD Tune on both the USB 2.0 and firewire 400 connections, unfortunately I was unable to test the firewire 800 connection because we did not have a system that supported it. Here are the results.

As you can see that’s what you should expect from an external hard drive on either of those connections.
