Hands On With Razer Blade Stealth & Core

Razer wants to change the game when it comes to Ultrabooks. As you know Ultrabooks are designed to be light and portable, but Razer wants their Blade Stealth to be real gaming Ultrabook. The way they are able to accomplish this is with their Core external graphics card enclosure.

The Razer Stealth is incredible light in thin. It is only 0.52″ thick and weighs in at just 2.75 pounds. You have a 12.5-inch QHD touch display with the option of a UHD display as well. The Stealth is powered by the latest Core i7 processors, Intel’s HD 520 graphics, up to 8GB of RAM, and up to a 512 GB PCIe solid state drive. On the chassis you will find two USB 2.0 ports and the newer Thunderbolt 3 USB Type-C port. This port is designed for charging and adding other accessories and displays. You also will be getting a fully backlit RGB keyboard with the ability to change the color of each individual key.

For gamers the Intel HD 520 graphics are not going to cut it, they will play casual games, but don’t expect to be playing Star Wars Battlefront at its maxed out settings. To make this truly a real gaming device Razer will be introducing the Core, which is an external graphics card enclosure. It plugs into the Stealth via the Thunderbolt 3 USB-C connector and will give you the graphics power you need for the latest games. It also has RGB lighting, giving it some style.

The Razer Core supports full-size dual-slot graphics cards from both AMD and NVIDIA. The unit Razer showed us had an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti installed. The unit also has a 300W power supply, which of course powers your graphics card. The internal part of the core is designed like a tray that you can pull out from the back. This make its really easy to install your graphics card.

The Core also has four USB 3.0 ports and an Ethernet port on the back so when you plug in the Core it sort of acts like a gaming dock. Connect your network, gaming keyboard, gaming mouse, and headset and you are ready to game!

Now the Blade Stealth by itself without the Core will start at $999. You will have the option to buy it with a the Core in the future, but pricing of the Core has not been released yet. This is a really cool product as it allows you to have a single device that is easy to take with you, but at the same time you can go home plug in the Core and be able to play your favorite games in the quality you would expect in a desktop.
