Gaming Friday: World of Tanks

We here at ThinkComputers are very avid gamers. So each Friday we will be covering a game that should help you get through the weekend. The games will range from new games to classics that we still love to play. They also are not limited to just PC games either. If you have a game you think we should cover check out the Gaming Friday thread in the forums.

This week we will be covering World of Tanks which is a new free to play game. I myself have been playing the game since its beta testing. Last week the game went live. World of Tanks is a morph/fps. You will gain experience to unlock better upgrades and better tanks. So let’s get into the some more info about the game.

The game is purely tank based right now, later on however they do plan on adding more into the game as in more tanks and maybe infantry. When you get into the game you start off with what they call a Tier 1 tank, but there are currently three different nations right now. You have to choose from USSR, USA, Germany. When you choose your nation, you have to figure out what learning tree you want to go down. There are many different setups you can do; medium tanks, SPG(long range Artillery) or heavy tanks. There are light tanks but they’re mostly starting tanks. With it being purely experience based you have to earn your way up to getting the better tanks. Within a few rounds in your lower tier tank you will be able to move up to a different tree and go from there. I myself went to the USSR tree and leveling up in the heavy tree . In the picture is a shot of the Tank tree.

In the main screen you have your garage with all of your tanks. The space is limited to what availed unless you purchase gold to unlock more packing spots. Also from here you can upgrade your tanks and parts.

Gameplay is fun and the game isn’t really demanding on graphics since it is using DirectX 9 graphics.. Not too bad being a free to play game.

The more you play the faster you rank up. Currently my highest is my Tier 5 heavy tank on the USSR. The best newbie strategy I could give to you all is to level up multiple tanks at once. Once your tank is destroyed hop out of battle and jump in with another, also only use the XP to choose your upgrade path wasting XP on a stuff on lower levels will screw you up and then you will wish you didn’t do it. Also I would look into joining a clan for the next few patches. They will start clan wars which is where you fight for control over Europe with your clan the more you hold the more you get. Here I will include some more screenshots of the game.

part of an active clan in WoT, and it has been veryfrustrating that it takes going premium to play in a platoon with your friends. i haven’t played seriously since the real launch, and it’s sad as i had a loaded IS, leapord, SU-8, and at least 2 other tanks i was still goofing around with.

I really digged this game in beta, and if i could see the money to pay to at least keep premium each month, i’d probably be playing seriously still.

    whoops..n00b post.

  • Ya the game is a pain after the reset but it is. For $15 a month i would pay for premium vs paying for other games. you can go any which way and level pretty fast with only buying the prem and not any other gold i was able to make it up to a IS as of today and a few other T5 tanks also.

  • I just built a WOT fansite that contains graphical charts and graphs on every tank and gun in the game. It helps players quickly size up enemy tanks.

    Happy Tanking!

OMG, i was a beta tester for this game and actually paid money for it on release and i cant believe how bad it is. I havnt felt such distaste for a game since the PC version of Black Ops. My issues with the game is that alot of key features are so broken if it was another industry they would have done a product recall, the matchmaking is broken to hell, ive got to a tier 9 medium and ending up with matches 4 on 3 and the group of 4 have tier 10 tanks and your team has tier 9… also the balancing of the tanks is terrible and is quite obvious that the company want russian tanks to be the best no matter what and dont get me started on the spotting in the game, it says on thing on the website and is totally different in game (we have done alot of testing as a clan) and the biggest mistake they have made…they gave ppl tier 8 tanks at the start of release and totally ruined it for ppl who paid for medium and light packages, i was actually looking forward to getting new tanks and new equipment, rant over.

You have the game only half right. It has more bugs than an ant hill. Worse of all is the simulation of artillery that isn’t even close to realistic for the era. Artillery, in the form of self-propelled guns, are often the high scorers in a match. Incoming fire curves to hit your vehicle and the ballistic mechanics of the simulation defies the laws of physics. There is no modeling for forward observers or “walking” artillery onto the target. Artillery hits on tanks were rare in WW2 and was no better when I was in Viet Nam.

Other bugs are fire from tanks you can’t see, called Invisi Tanks by players, is common as are line of sight bugs. Misses at almost point blank range and bounced shells are common. By bounced shells I mean a German 88mm shell is a ricochet or you get the dreaded “We barely dented him” message when firing at a light or medium tank.

There still are no clan (guild) wars although you can create or join a clan.

The maps are few, repetitive and small that leaves little room for classical tank maneuvers. All maps have funnel points that make “Capture the Base” a bloody affair. This makes experience grinding mind numbingly boring.

All in all the release version is still the beta version with lots of bugs still remaining. If you want to play the game expect some fun but don’t expect realism.

If you buy it by the month premium is $10

The catch is that it is free to play, Pay to win. After reaching tier 6 vehicles it becomes difficult to obtain experiance and credits even on premium with costs $12.50 for 30 days but Wargaming has thrown in an extra 500 gold to round off the payment to $15.00. ( 3000 gold total )

At this time is there $15.00 worth of content… NO … Right now this game is a FPS with tanks, thats about it. Most will find the climb to high tier tanks annoying at best. Once you get to the top tier there is nothing to do, no exploration, no crafting, no quests, no single player… nothing. The game has one play mode which is capture the base and or eliminate all players. PVP is the core of the game and I tell ya after 1000’s of battles it gets really old.

Oh and your paying for a game that is not complete.

The depth of this game is equal to a puddle in Death Valley. If Wargaming wants to capture the North American market for more than 2 or 3 months they really need to complete the game and lower thier prices.

The beta was very fun and game play enjoyable. In the live environment customer support is poor. Buying gold was easy (taking your money) but getting it into my account was difficult. Trying to get support from their financial support department was a nightmare. Not a recommended experience for a micro transaction dependent company.Play free if you like but I do not suggest buying gold.
