First LinkNYC Public WiFi Access Points Installed

This week workers began installing the first LinkNYC access points in New York. If you can remember LinkNYC was first announced back in November of 2014. The hubs are designed as an update to the standard phone booth and will provide Gigabit WiFi access points.

The Verge spotted this access point being installed outside a Starbucks at 15th St and 3rd Avenue, near Manhattan’s Union Square. 500 more hubs are expected to be installed throughout the city by mid-July. LinkNYC expects 1-2 weeks before New York residents will be able to use the hubs for the first time. The full network will be comprised of more than 7500 public hubs throughout the city, each replacing a pre-existing phone booth. The hubs will include USB device charging ports, touchscreen web browsing, and two 55-inch advertising displays. The city estimates that the new hubs will generate more than $500 million in revenue over the next 12 years.
