Early Details on the AMD R9 390X Emerge

AMD is currently working on their next-generation chip designs. It seems they are going to be coming out with a massive 500sq.mm+ GPU, which will arrive in our hands as the Radeon R9 390X.

AMD’s next-generation chips are being designed by Synapse Design, a company which recently announced new GPU tapeouts. These include two 28HPM silicons. The first one that catches our attention is a massive 500sq.mm+ chip, which will be as powerful as 20nm SoC technology. This massive chip should be what turns out to be the Radeon R9 390X. The rumored clock speed of the R9 390X should be 1 GHz or above. Unfortunately this card will not feature High Bandwidth Memory (HBM).

The second 350sq.mm+ chip is likely to be Tonga. It has been confirmed that Tonga is almost as big as Tahiti, so 350sq.mm+ seems pretty reasonable.

Expect more leaks as time goes on, but the R9 390X is shaping up to be a beast!
