“Coffee Lake” To Be Intel’s First 6-core Mainstream SKU

Intel’s “Coffee Lake” micro-architecture, or the 9th generation Core processor family, which will succeed the the upcoming 7th generation “Kaby Lake” and 8th generation “Cannon Lake” processors is slated to be released in the second half of 2018. The Core “Coffee Lake” family could bring with it Intel’s first 6-core processor to the mainstream desktop platform.

If you can remember Intel released their first 6-core client processor back in 2010 in the form of the Core i7 “Gulftown” processor. This processor was part of Intel’s high-end desktop (HEDT) line of processors. Intel’s mainstream processors have been stuck on quad-core parts for sometime now. The 6-core “Coffee Lake” processor would be the first to break that mold. It is expected to be built on a highly-refined 14nm node by Intel and will have a die size of 149 mm². Quad-core parts in this series will not be build on the same silicon with two cores disabled, but rather on smaller 126 mm² die.

The platform layout diagram has been leaked by BenchLife, which you see above. Looking at this diagram it is highly unlikely that “Coffee Lake” will be based off the LGA1151 socket as there are new connectivity interfaces coming out of the CPU package.
