China Working On World’s Fastest Supercomputer

It looks like China is working on a new Supercomputer. It has plans in the works to have a prototype exascale computer by the end of 2017. China wants to be the first country to have a Supercomputer that is capable of a billion, yes a billion calculations per second!

China Fastest Supercomputers

If they can achieve this goal it would make them #1 in Supercomputing beating out the world’s #1 supercomputer, the Sunway TaihuLight machine which was powered on in June 2016.

Although China might have a prototype by the end of the year, a working exascale-capable Supercomputer is likely years away according to Zhang Ting, the application engineer at the National Supercomputer Center in the port of Tianjin.

Here is quoted as saying. “A complete computing system of the exascale supercomputer and its applications can only be expected in 2020, and will be 200 times more powerful than the country’s first petaflop computer Tianhe-1, recognised as the world’s fastest in 2010”.

Right now as it stands China has more top-ranked supercomputers than the US at 167 compared to the US’s 165. Although out of the 10 fastest the US has 5 whereas China only has two.
