AMD’s AM4 Socket To Be Used For Both Excavator and Zen Architecture

AMD’s upcoming CPU socket is AM4 and the company has quite a lot riding on it. We’ve already known that AMD’s Zen architecture will make use of this new socket, but it looks like Excavator will use it as well. Excavator is an incremental upgrade to AMD’s Bulldozer architecture, while Zen is the next major architecture. We could see the first products based on the AM4 socket as early as March in the form of the “Bristol Ridge” APUs.

The “Bristol Ridge” APUs will succeed the company’s “Carrizo” APUs. These will be available in socket AM4 as well as FP4. The AM4 socket APUs will support DDR4 while the FP4 implementation will support both DDR3 and DDR4. “Bristol Ridge” will offer up to 4 “Excavator” CPU cores with TDP’s ranging from 45-65W and support for DDR4-2400 memory. Later in 2016 we will see the Zen architecture make use of the AM4 socket.
