This month is bringing out the Radeon R9 270 which is going to be AMD’s yet another addition to the Volcanic Islands graphic cards. Most of us might have seen this in the previous months and the quite obviously the X version of this had to be released first. VR-Zone’s report has stated that the card is going to be launched on the 13th of this month and that’s when the tech portals will be giving out their reviews. The release date is 13th and the card and its reference design will be made available the very next day. The card follows the Curacao Pro core which means that it is going to have the same specifications Curacao XT core but the only difference will be the lower clock speeds.
This Curacao Pro core, on which the card has been based, equips 1280 cores, 32 ROPs and 64 TMUs. It has a GDDR5 memory of 2 GB which surfaces on the 256-bit interface which has an effective speed of 5.6 GB per second. Clock speeds for the reference design has been kept at 925 MHz whereas the non reference available for sale is surely going to push up these clock speeds. The X version of this card consumes 180W whereas for this one, the TDP has been brought down to a mere 150W.
Since the Radeon R7 260X failed against the GTX 650 Ti boost in the war of price against performance, we can’t really be sure whether AMD is placing the Radeon R9 270 in such a position so as to compete with the GeForce GTX 660. The most rational thing has been done by AMD by placing the card under the sub-$199 price range where it will manage to remain competitive with the $169-$179 US GeForce GTX 660 (Non-Ti).
