AMD Reference-Design Radeon HD 7990 Revealed

At GDC’s press briefings this week AMD previewed the reference-design of the Radeon HD 7990 dual-GPU graphics card. This is the first public showing of the card and while AMD is not saying much we do know that this has two series 7900 GPU’s on it and it is being called by the codename “Malta”. AMD has really taken their time with the Radeon HD 7990 and actually allowed their partners to create 7900 series cards with two GPU’s on them, but this card will be the reference.

As you can see from the slide above the card is a dual-slot card featuring three 90mm cooling fans. These fans sit atop a large and complex heatsink that covers the GPU’s, bridge chip, and the VRM. The card would directly compete with NVIDIA’s Titan graphics card for the faster consumer card on the market. No word yet on when the card would be available, but with AMD expected to ship Radeon HD 8800 series cards in the second half of 2013 we should see these cards by summer.

About 10 years of computer experience. Been messing around with electronics since I was 5, got into computers when I was in highschool, been modding them ever since then. Very interested in how things work and their design.
