AMD Radeon R9 290X Flagship Graphics Card Detailed

With the announcement of AMD’s R9 and R7 “Volcanic Islands” graphics cards AMD has a new flagship graphics card, the R9 290X. This today is currently the most powerful single GPU graphics card available. Read on to see all of the details about this awesome new card from AMD.

The R9 290X makes use of the brand new Hawaii GPU architecture, which is aimed to compete with NVIDIA’s GK100 GPU that powers their Titan card. The R9 290X has a full blown Hawaii chip with 2816 shaders, 44 raster operators and 176 texture mapping units. The card will have a base clock of 800 MHz and supports a GPU boost frequency of 1000 MHz.

The memory gets a big upgrade from the previous version as it is running on a 512-bit interface compared to the 384-bit bus on the Radeon HD 7970. The card comes equipped with 4 GB of GDDR5 memory, which is lower than the GeForce GTX Titan, but higher than the 3 GB on the GeForce GTX 780. The higher 512-bit bus allows for much higher bandwidth and AMD says the card has over 300 GB/sec memory bandwidth. All of this equates to over 5 TFLOPS of compute power!

The card itself comes with a new cooling system and much noticeable new shroud design. The cooler makes use of a large vapor chamber, which then the air is thrown by the large blower fan out of the exhaust vents. The card is powered by 8+6 pin power configurations and has a rated TDP of 270W. Display outputs include Dual-DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort.
