AMD Radeon R9 290X and Radeon R9 290 Series Official Presentation Leaked

The official presentation for the AMD Radeon R9 290X and R9 290 graphics cards have been leaked. This gives us more official information that ever before about these two new cards from AMD! While the AMD R9 Series cards were announced at AMD’s GPU 14 event last month AMD never revealed any specifications or performance numbers.

If you have been following our AMD coverage since the announcement you may already know the some of the specifications that have been leaked about these cards. Both the R9 290X and R9 290 graphics cards are based on the Hawaii GPU and are the only products in AMD’s R9 and R7 lineups that are not rebranded parts.

AMD Radeon R9 290X (Hawaii XT)

The Radeon R9 290X is of course the flagship of the entire series. It has a full blown Hawaii chip with 2816 stream processors which are divided into 44 CUs (compute units). The card has a clock speed of up to 1 GHz. The card also will feature a dual BIOS, which is interesting as we normally never see a feature like this on a reference card. The card will have a compute performance of 5.6 TFlops. It will also have 64 ROPs, which is the same amount that was on the Radeon HD 7970.

Moving on the card has 4GB of GDDR5 memory that runs along a 512-bit interface. The memory has an effective clock speed of 5.0 GHz that provides over 320 GB/s of bandwidth. Outputs include dual DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort. The card gets power from 6pin and 8pin PCI-Express power connectors. The card is expected to go on sale next week for $649.99.

AMD Radeon R9 290 (Hawaii Pro)

The Radeon R9 290 is the more cost effective card. It also features the Hawaii chip, but it only has 2560 stream processors, which means only 40 CUs are enabled. The card has a clock speed of up to 947 MHz. The memory is the same as the 290X as you have 4 GB of GDDR5 memory running across a 512-bit interface at 5.0 GHz (effective). Display outputs include dual DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort. We are not sure on an exact date for the R9 290, but it will retail for $499.

AMD Radeon R9 Series 4K Performance

So how about performance? More specifically 4K performance, check out the slide below.

Looking at the slide you can see the card does pretty well at the 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution, staying between 30 FPS and 60 FPS for most of the titles. There are only a few single chip solutions that can offer this type of performance at 4K resolution. Those cards are NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 780 and GTX Titan.

AMD-Radeon-R9-290X-CrossFire-Scaling

Now if you are going to be picking up more than one of these cards we can see what type of scaling you will get. Two R9 290X’s will deliver 1.87X accurate scaling in 3DMark FireStrike and three will provide up to 2.60X accurate scaling. Oh and no CrossFire cables needed!

Expect to see even more information and performance numbers as we get closer to the launch of the R9 290X.
