Information from various sources indicate that AMD is working on the Tahiti XTL core based revision of their recently released Radeon R9 280X graphics card. The current Radeon R9 280X which was released earlier this month features the Tahiti XT2 core, which is very similar to the one that was on the Radeon HD 7970 GHz.
This is not the first time we have heard of the Tahiti XTL core as it came up in many reports when AMD’s R200 series was launched. It has been said that AMD did not manufacture that many of these chips early on so they did not appear in any of the R9 280X models at launch.
Now that AMD has more Tahiti XTL chips on hand they will be doing a running-change on their cards. The Tahiti XTL chip will end up in various Radeon R9 280X cards sometime in November. AMD is planning no new naming or branding scheme that will differentiate between cards with the Tahiti XTL and Tahiti XT2. This may cause some confusion for consumers.
The new Tahiti XTL chip is said to bring with it lower power consumption and possibly features like AMD TrueAudio and DirectX 11.2 support. We are unsure if the clock speeds will be higher or not. Currently we are not sure how you will be able to tell if a card features the Tahiti XTL or Tahiti XT2 chip unless you install the card in your system. Pricing on the Radeon R9 290X will remain the same.
