AMD Officially Announces the Radeon R9 285

Over the weekend AMD held their 30th Anniversary event. At the event they officially announced the Radeon R9 285. The AMD R9 285 is equipped with the Tonga PRO GPU, which has 1792 stream processors, 112 TMUs, and 32 ROPs. The card will come equipped with 2 GB or 4 GB of GDDR5 memory that operates at 5.5 GHz (effective). The core clock speed of the card is set at 918 MHz.

The main difference between Tonga and Tahiti is memory bus. The R9 285 will only have a 256b interface, which will bottleneck serious UltraHD gaming. The card will support both AMD Mantle and DirectX 12. AMD is claiming that the card will be up to 15% faster than the GeForce GTX 760. The card will have a MSRP of $249 and be available September 2nd 2014. Custom-made cards will also be available day one.
