AMD Next-Gen Ellesmere And Baffin “Arctic Islands” GPUs Taped Out

We’ve heard a lot about AMD’s Greenland GPU in the past year, which is set to be their high-end offering in their “Arctic Islands” family of GPUs. Well it looks like “Arctic Islands” will contain three main GPUs, Greenland for the high-end, Ellesmere for the mid-range, and Baffin for the entry-level. It looks like both Ellesmere and Baffin have been taped out and are awaiting FinFET process volume production, which will kick off next year.

With this AMD will be launching these three GPUs in a variety of different SKUs, which will address the entire discrete GPU market from top to bottom. We’ve actually seen this before from AMD when they launched their first 28nm GPUs codenamed “Southern Islands”, which came in the from of the HD 7900 series, HD 7800 series, and HD 7700 series.

Expect to hear more about Ellesmere and Baffin as we get closer to 2016.
