AMD Announces Radeon Vega Frontier Edition

The first Radeon Vega graphics card here! The sad part is that it is not for gamers, but rather part of the Radeon Pro line aimed at data scientists, immersion engineers and product designers. It will be released in the second half of June for AMD “pioneers”. With that AMD will “technically” release Vega in 2H 2017 as they promised, just not the consumer, gaming version of Vega we’ve all been waiting for. Sadly, this could also mean an after-June release for consumer GPUs based on the Vega micro-architecture.

Radeon Vega Frontier Edition comes packed with 16 GB of next-generation HBM2 with an estimated 12.5 TFLOPS (the TITAN Xp has 12 FLOPS for comparison) of peak single precision compute performance (FP32), and 25 TFLOPs of single precision compute (FP16). The Vega GPU will be clocked at 1586 MHz.

AMD directly compared Radeon Vega Frontier Edition to the Radeon R9 Fury X graphics card, showing a 1.5x increased in FP32 performance, 3x increase in FP16 performance, and 4 x the VRAM with 16GB of HBM2 versus 4GB of HBM1 on Fury X.

The card itself is designed with a typical blower-style fan and dual 8-pin PCI-Express power connectors. The shroud is blue on the card with a yellow “Radeon” logo and a “R” in the corner which both look like they light up. There is also a yellow Vega logo on the front of the shroud as well as the full-cover backplate.

AMD will also be offering a liquid cooled version of the card with an all-in-one solution that looks to make use of a 120 mm radiator. On this version the card has a gold shroud and blue accents.
