ADATA Premier Pro SP920SS 256 GB Solid State Drive Review

ADATA Premier Pro SP920SS Overview
The Premier Pro SP920SS is your typical solid state drive in the 2.5-inch form factor. It has a metal casing and a sticker on the top that lets us know we have the 256 GB version. The SP920SS also comes in 128 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB capacities.

Flipping the drive over there is another sticker with your model and serial numbers, warranty code and your Acronis True Image HD key (we have blurred it out). It is great that ADATA is bundling useful software with this drive.

The drive itself is 7 mm thick, which means that it will fit in most Ultrabooks. There are also mounting points on each side of the drive.

On the end of the drive you of course have your SATA power and data connections.

The drive can be opened up by removing the 4 screws on the top of the drive. When you remove the top of the drive you can see the PCB, but all of the components are actually on the opposite side.

Removing 4 more screws we can get the entire PCB out and see the internal workings of the drive. The drive features Marvell’s 88SS9189 controller that is accompanied by a Micron DRAM cache chip. There are 8 20 nm 32GB Micron Synchronous MLC NAND flash chips. These are the new 128 Gbit NAND chips, that do bring prices down, but also cause decreased NAND parallelism. This is why the lower capacity versions of this drive have slower speeds.
