The iPhone 5S
As I said the iPhone 5S is the true successor to the iPhone 5. Unlike all the colors of the iPhone 5C the 5S will be available in the normal Black and White along with the new Gold color.
As far as the casing and everything else you will have the same unibody aluminum design with the two tone colors. That will mean that all of the cases made for the iPhone 5 will work just fine on your iPhone 5S.
Powering the iPhone 5S is Apple’s new A7 processor. This is a 64-bit chip, the first 64-bit chip in a smartphone. Apple claims this chip will make the iPhone 5S twice as fast as the iPhone 5. For the geeks out there the chip has 3x general-purpose registers, 2x floating-point registers and over a billion transistors. Working alongside the A7 processors is the new M7 coprocessor. It’s job is to constantly measure motion data with accelerometer, gyroscope and compass support. Apple says this will “enable a new generation of health and fitness apps”.
Moving on to another addition to the iPhone 5S is the fingerprint scanner. It is built right into the home button on the phone. The scanner itself is 170 microns thin, has a 500 ppi resolution, scans sub-epidermal skin layers and has 360-degree readability. Apple is calling this new feature Touch ID. Not only can you use it to unlock your phone but it has been deeply embedded into iOS 7. For example you will be able to purchase songs on the iTunes Music Store by using your fingerprint. You can store multiple fingerprints and Apple says your fingerprints will never be stored on Apple’s servers or be backed up to iCloud.
Moving on to the camera, while the camera remains the 8 megapixel iSight camera Apple has improved the flash and lens. The flash is now a dual-LED flash, which will actually make the flash on the iPhone 5S usable. One of the LED’s is white and the other one is amber, this will help your photos look more balanced. You also have a larger f/2.2 aperture and 15% larger sensor. In simple terms that means the camera will have 33% greater light sensitivity which should make for clearer, better looking photos. Other additions to the camera include auto image stabilization, burst mode, and 720p video at 120 fps.
The iPhone 5S will have a bit better battery life, but not by much. You will get 10 hours of 3G talk time, 250 hours standby, 10 hours LTE browsing and 40 hours music of playback.
The iPhone 5S will be available in retail channels starting September 20th. The 16 GB will be $199, 32 GB will be $299 and the 64 GB will be $399.
