Thermaltake TMG IA1 CPU Cooler Review

Installation

Installation is rather quick and simple especially if you’ve used a pushpin design. While the pushpin isn’t the safest way to secure the heatsink to the motherboard it does make it a lot quick and usually easier to install. For this installation we used the LGA 775 installation.

To start off remove the plastic cover over the base of the heatsink. Then apply a thin layer of thermal grease onto your CPU, assuming you have a clean CPU. To attach the mounting hardware to the base four screws and the two clips will be required. Simply fasten the clips to the bottom of the base so that the notches are facing towards the center.

Before installing the heatsink onto the CPU cooler you probably want to make sure that you’ve attached the VR fan controller mainly because the cable is relatively short and may be difficult to attach once the cooler is installed.

Since the instructions don’t give a whole lot of detail on which way you should install the cooler I’d recommend installing it with the fan facing towards the motherboard. The reason being, at least for my installation, is that the fan will blow the air through the heatsink and up towards the top of my case where I have 2 exhaust fans. Since this is a wide CPU cooler you probably won’t be able to install it sideways so that air could blow through and out the back of the case.

To actually install it with the pushpin design just apply a slight push onto the pushpin until it snaps through the motherboard, then repeat this for all four steps. It may take some trial and error as some other pushpins might pop out when pushing down on another pushpin.

When installing my motherboard back into the case I encountered a problem. I wasn’t able to attach the 8 pin connector in the upper left hand corner of my motherboard. To install it I had to attach it to the motherboard prior to putting it in the case.

The tower design for this heatsink doesn’t allow a lot of extra space between the side panel and the top of the fan. Some people could have problems with this, especially if they have something like a fan or noise dampening system attached to the side panel.

Once powered on the TMG IA1 gives off a blue luminance to the innards of the case.
