We got our first look at Xi3’s Piston during CES in January. Since then Xi3 has made many improvements to it and it will be available just in time for the holidays! The Piston is an extremely compact PC system that is roughly the size of a softball (4.27×3.656×3.656-inches).
Full tower cases, massive CPU coolers, and quad-fan cooled GPU’s are what the PC industry is all about, right? If you talked to a representative from Xi3 and assumed those things you’d probably get slapped. Xi3 is a company that revolves around the idea that full function computing is something that sound be accomplished with hardware no bigger than your fist. Smaller is better and with a recent investment announcement made by Valve, Xi3 and there product line is nothing to look down at.
Last week we talked about Xi3’s X7A and X3A modular computers hitting kickstarter and now we have even more details on them as Xi3 sent us over their latest press release. I’ve been working with desktops for years, every time there is some big advancement in laptops people say desktops are done, but it has yet to happen. Desktops are not done by any means, “they’ve just been boring” says the developers of the Xi3 Modular Computer Project. They want to change the way computers a built, serviced, and upgraded. They have taken their latest project to Kickstarter where they are looking to raise a quarter of a million dollars.
