When Valve announced their Steam Machines BETA program and listed the specifications for the BETA units the GPUs that were listed included the NVIDIA GTX Titan, GTX 780, GTX 760 and GTX 660. So it looked like official Steam Machines would be an all NVIDIA affair. In a recent interview Valve’s Doug Lombardi said that this is not true.
We reported last week that Half-Life 3 was officially trademarked, well that actually turned out to be fake. It was never officially checked or authenticated so it mysteriously vanished. Now a Portal 3 trademark has been officially filed, but this one has been officially checked and authenticated.
Just about two weeks ago Valve announced Steam Machines along with SteamOS and the Stream Controller. Steam Machines are said to be next generation gaming machines aimed at gamers that want to game in the living room on the big screen. Valve announced that Steam Machines would ship in 2014, but would be sending out 300 BETA units to eligible Steam users. Valve has now released the specifications of what some of the prototype units would be.
The Half-Life series has been around for the longest time and when it comes to first person shooters, especially single player games Half-Life 2 is always mentioned when talking about one of the best games and storylines. So many of us have waited for a sequel year after year and there has been no announcement from Valve at all. While it may be a far off for the game to actually be released or even announced it has been discovered that Valve has filed for the trademark “Half-Life 3” in both English and French.
We knew Valve was going to have three announcements this week. The first was SteamOS, the second was Steam Machines and now the third is the Steam Controller. For those thinking it was going to be Half-Life 3, it looks like you are still going to have to wait for that. The Steam Controller completes the “Living Room” experience that Valve is trying to create with all of these products that they have announced.
Well it looks like the “Steambox” will be a reality as Valve has announced their entry into the PC hardware world with Steam Machines. Steam Machines is a device that is bundled with Valve’s own SteamOS operating system and will allow you to play all of your favorite games in a living room setting.
Valve has officially announced its own operating system, which they are calling SteamOS. This is actually one of three announcements that Valve will be making this week. The big headline about SteamOS is that it will be completely free to you the consumer!
Some buzz about the Valve gaming consoles had been circulating around for quite some time and it was rumored that the Valve will be launching their very own set of consoles and hardware exclusively for the gamers under the name tag of ‘Steam Box’. The rumors might seem to be coming true as a new page on Steam just went live and it’s being called ‘Living Room’. And so it looks like the release of a Steam console from Valve is on the way.
Valve is always updating the Steam client. It seems every time I open it up to play a game game there is some type of update. There are normally bug fixes and other small improvements. According to Gamersbook Valve will soon be adding both a trading and gifting option to the client.
For all of those looking for a Valve announcement at E3 for either Half-Life 3 or the rumored Steam Box, it looks like you are not going to get one. Doug Lombardi of Valve Software confirmed that Valve will not be exhibiting at this years E3 event which is to be held June 11-13th. Doug left things pretty simple as you can see below, no really elaborating as to why Valve will not be exhibiting, but we have a few ideas.
