OCZ has just launched the Vertex 450 SATA III solid state drive series. This drive will be replacing the Vertex 4 and will feature OCZ’s own Indilinx Barefoot 3 M10 controller. The drive boasts read and write speeds of 540 MB/s and 530 MB/s respectively and a 4K random write performance of up to 90,000 IOPS. The drive is also 7mm thin so it can fit in your Ultrabook.
Innodisk has announced the world’s first industrial embedded SATA nanoSSD. Since we know for a fact that that single chip SSDs run at a much more freely pace than their corresponding items. It measures (0.63×0.79) in size and takes just 1W of maximum power but still can read at a speed of 480MB/s and further and writes at 175MB/s. It is one of those SSDs that can supposedly pack desktop-class storage into any type of Smartphone and tablets. Still uncertain whether where and when will see this drive in a complete form.
Sometimes it can be hard to find an easy, affordable and reliable solution for external PC backups in one product. I have used several HDD enclosures and NAS products from several different makers and never really fell in love with any of them. Most of them have extremely complicated menus that you have to sift through to try and figure out how to change the RAID setup of the device. Then you have to wait several hours just for it to format a few hundred Gigs of space. In the past, when deciding on a RAID capable enclosure you really need to prioritize what is important to you and ask yourself a few questions. How much does it cost? How reliable it is? How easy is it to use? Keep all of those questions in mind as you read this review and I think you will be pleasantly surprised with this enclosure.
With USB 3.0 becoming more of a standard these days many companies are coming out with new USB 3.0 flash drives. These new flash drives not only hold more data but they can transfer that data a hell of alot faster. No one wants to wait around for their files to transfer. ADATA has a new USB 3.0 flash drive that looks just as good as it performs. The DashDrive Elite UE700 has a brushed aluminum finish and features read and write speeds of up to 190 MB/s and 50 MB/s respectively. Let’s see what this drive is all about!
Seagate who we have known for years for their hard drives has been relatively quiet in the solid state drive space. Well it seems that is changing as today they are unveiling a complete solid state drive line, including their first consumer-based solid state drives. The new products include the Seagate 600 SSD, Seagate 600 Pro SSD, Seagate 1200 SSD and Seagate X8 Accelerator.
QNAP has released the Turbo NAS TS-x21 and TS-x20 series of network attached storage devices. The TS-x21 series is powered by a 2.0 GHz CPU and 1GB of DDR3 memory. The TS-x20 series is a step down being powered by a 1.6 GHz CPU and 512 MB of DDR3 memory. Both of these devices are idea of home and small business setups for file storage, sharing, data backup and media servers.
WD has announced today that they are shipping the world’s first ultra-slim 2.5-inch, 5 mm hard drives and solid state hybrid drives (SSHD). These new drives are designed for slim devices like tablets where there is not much space available. With their 500 GB capacity these drives are aimed to increase storage capacity while enabling them to fit in smaller device slots.
Finally Akitio has added a larger capacity drive to their Thunderbolt storage line. Last year they introduced a 120 GB version, but these days with HD video and other large files 120 GB is just not enough. Today they are announcing a 256 GB version of their Neutrino Thunderbolt Edition. By using a solid state drive and a high performance SATA controller this drive is able to achieve transfer speeds of up to 464 MB/second making it the fastest one bay, bus powered external storage device on the market.
Hard drive docks are nothing new. They have been around for quite some time and we have reviewed a handful of them. The only thing that has really changed in the way of hard drive docks is the connections. When USB 3.0 came out we saw a new round of hard drive docks with the new, faster connection. So what is next for hard drive docks? Vantec seems to think WiFi is. It makes sense, we have so many wireless devices now with tablets and smartphones ruling our lives. So why not be able to access the information on any hard drive without having to have a USB connection on your device? This is where the NexStar WiFi Hard Drive Dock comes in. It is your normal hard drive dock supporting 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch drives and has a USB 3.0 connection, but it also has WiFi so you can use an iOS or Android device to connect to it and access your files. Let’s dive in!
Silicon Power has released a new solid state drive series known as the Velox V50. These drives are SATA 6GB/s drives and come in 4 different capacities: 32 GB, 64 GB, 129 GB and 256 GB. Using “the latest controller technology” these drives have rated speeds of 530 MB/s read and 200 MB/s write, although it is not clear exactly which controller these new drives are using. The drives do sport MLC NAND flash.
