Expreview decided to go in quite some detail with the HIS-branded AMD reference design Radeon R9 290X graphics card as it was taken apart piece by piece for a review which predominantly revealed the specs and the features. This detaching was done to reveal some of the major components and features such as the cooling system, the PCB, the VRM, and one of the most highlighted of all, the all new 28 nm “Hawaii” silicon.
Well AMD’s R9 and R7 series cards are here and that means that video card manufacturers have released their own versions of these cards with custom PCB designs, factory overclocks and custom cooling solutions. One such company is Sapphire and today we are talking a look at their top of the line Radeon R9 280X Toxic. The card not only happens to be Sapphire’s top of the line card, but also one of the most powerful R9 280X’s out there! Sapphire has loaded this card with a factory overclock of 1100 MHz for the core with a 1150 MHz boost and the memory is also overclocked to 6.4 GHz (effective). They are using a custom PCB with a 10 phase power configuration that features double sided black diamond chokes and solid capacitors. The block diagram for AMD’s next generation R9 290 series “Hawaii” chip has been leaked by EasyCom in their review of the R9 280X. Recently we covered the R9 Series in detail and talk about the specifications, but until now very little was known about the Hawaii chip itself. Now we will get to see the architectural changes the Hawaii chip has made over its predecessor Tahiti.
A whole new series of Radeon Graphic cards was announced earlier this day by XFX. A string of models was unveiled which included the R9 290X, R9 290, R9 280X, R9 270X, R7 260X and the R7 250. All these form part of XFX’s first attempt towards the AMD range of GPUs and all the above mentioned models feature AMD’s 2nd generation award winning GCN Architecture and PowerTune Technology.
The testing by HardwareCanucks revealed that Radeon R9 280X was CrossFire compatible with the Radeon HD 7970. This has surely brought some good news for the users of HD 7970. The users who were previously hoping to include a Tahiti to the CrossFire can satisfy their wish by the Radeon R9 280X addition which is comparatively cheaper than the HD 7970 models available online.

We knew ASUS R9 280X Matrix cards were coming from ASUS as the card was pictured last week. ASUS actually has two R9 280X Matrix cards. There is the Platinum Edition and the Standard Edition. Both of these cards are powered by the latest AMD Radeon R9 280X GPU.
AMD’s Radeon R9 and Radeon R7 series graphics cards are now officially available around the globe from AMD and its various AIC partners. AMD has announced that three cards are available through retail channels today, those cards include the AMD Radeon R9 280X, AMD Radeon R9 270X and the AMD Radeon R7 260X.
AMD Radeon R9 280X, Radeon R9 270X, and many different AMD R7 series card from several different AMD AIC partners have been unveiled. Many of these cards feature a non-reference cooling design from the manufacturer and some of the more notable cards are ASUS’s DirectCU, MSI’s Gaming Series and XFX double dissipation.
We already know that most of AMD’s R9 and R7 series cards will be available October 8th so it is no surprise that we are going to start seeing non-reference cards pop up from AMD’s AIB partners.
