The standard for DDR3 memory is still 1.5v, but most high performance memory has voltages far above that. Many earlier high performance DDR3 modules had a Vdimm of 1.9v-2.1v. It still amazes me that the memory manufacturers were able to make DDR3 memory run at DDR3-2000 and higher at 1.65v. Today I will be looking at yet another low voltage dual channel kit, this one by OCZ, their Platinum DDR3-1333 4GB kit. It runs with timings of 7-7-7-20, at Intel’s required 1.65v. And of course these modules sport OCZ’s shiny platinum heatspreaders. Will this memory take my i7/P55 to victory? Read on to see!
It obviously wasn’t an insurmountable problem, as we saw DDR3-2000 triple channel kits not long after the release of the LGA 1366 i7, and I found that not only did they do DDR3-2000 at that voltage, they were all able to be overclocked beyond that. Now that the LGA 1156 has been released, we need dual channel kits utilizing that same low voltage requirement. That obviously was no problem, the memory was already there, they just needed packaging that held only two modules rather than three. Today I will be looking at one of Corsair’s low voltage dual channel kits, the Corsair Dominator DDR3-1600 i7/i5 4GB Dual Channel kit. Our friends at Crucial are definitely onboard, they have released new Ballistix Tracer triple channel kits. Today, armed with a retail i7 920, and a shiny new BIOS from Gigabyte, I will have another go at this memory. Will I be successful, or will I once again end up with egg on my face? Read on to see! A quick recap, the memory runs at DDR3-2000 9-9-9-27, at Intel’s mandatory 1.65v. The modules sport some really nice pin-fin styled heatspreaders in Kingston’s traditional HyperX blue. The memory supports Intel’s XMP with a pair of preset configurations, DDR3-2000 and DDR3-1866, in case the motherboard won’t make the trip to a full 2000mHz.
So I find it incredible that less than six months after the release of the i7 that you can actually build a pretty awesome i7 rig at budget prices. Add to that the fact that last year the bar was raised quite a bit for video card performance, you can build a really butt-kicking i7 gaming rig for under a grand. Sure, you can spend twice that or more if you wish, but there is really no need to. Today I will be looking at OCZ’s DDR3-1600 Platinum 6GB kit. With its shiny XTC heatspreaders, 6 gigs of triple-channel goodness, and OCZ’s reputation for high quality memory, along with a low price that will really blow you away, this memory kit should be a winner.
