Even with the flood of Ivy Bridge processors and Z77 motherboards out there many people (especially gamers) that still prefer Sandy Bridge-E processors and X79 motherboards. This is because of the increased L3 cache on Sandy Bridge-E processors and the availability of more PCIe lanes. When a new chipset comes out almost every motherboard manufacturer releases a slew of motherboards and it is really hard to choose which one is right for you. As it stands right now ASRock has 10 motherboard based on the X79 chipset. Today we are checking out one of ASRock’s mid-range X79 motherboards the X79 Extreme6/GB. It is really hard to call this board mid-range as it has all of the features any enthusiast, gamer or overclocker would want. With its sleek looks, three SLI/CrossFire PCIe 3.0 slots, support for up to 64GB memory and 10 SATA connectors this board means business. The Extreme6 comes in two flavors the normal Extreme6 and the Extreme6/GB. The Extreme6 actually comes in 2 different versions the plain Extreme6 and the Extreme6/GB. The GB stands for Game Blaster, which is a PCIe add-on card that gives you great 7.1 audio and Gigabit Ethernet. Intel’s X79 platform has been out for a little while now. This platform is the real high-end when it comes to gaming and CPU-intensive tasks. ASUS has quite a few different X79 motherboards to choose from. Today we will be taking a look at their P9X79 Pro Motherboard. With Intel’s X79 chipset we started to see quad channel DDR3 memory. It is crazy to think that in just a short period of time we have gone from dual channel to quad channel memory. Not long after Intel released the X79 platform we started to see quad channel kits designed and certified specifically for the platform. Gigabyte’s lineup of Intel X79 or Sandy Bridge-E motherboards is only made up of four boards. For gamers there is the G1 Assassin 2, X79-UD7-OC for overclockers, and X79-UD5 for enthusiasts. This brings us to the X79-UD3 which is Gigabyte’s entry-level and least expensive Intel X79 motherboard coming it at $249. Sandy Bridge-E is Intel’s high-end platform and the X79 chipset is much improved over its P67/Z68 counterparts. You now have 40 PCI-Express 3.0 lanes and quad-channel memory. That means with this board you can easily throw in up to 32GB of DDR3 and run 4-way Crossfire or SLI right out of the box. Also this is the first time we will see Gigabyte’s 3D BIOS. When Intel released their new Sandy Bridge-E Processors late last year there was the flagship processor the i7-3930K which has a price tag of $599 and the I7-3930X which has an even more staggering price tag of $999. When these processors were announced there was word of a more budget-friendly processor that would be out in Q1 of this year. It is here in the form of the Core i7-3820. This processor features 4 cores, features Intel’s Hyperthreading technology for up to 8 threads, a default clock speed of 3.6GHz with a turbo speed of 3.9GHz, 10MB of Intel Smart Cache, and this processor is built on the 32nm process. This processor puts Intel’s X79 platform in the reach of many people with a price tag that is half of the i7-3930K at $300. Read on to see what this processor is all about.
