OCZ has just launched the Vertex 450 SATA III solid state drive series. This drive will be replacing the Vertex 4 and will feature OCZ’s own Indilinx Barefoot 3 M10 controller. The drive boasts read and write speeds of 540 MB/s and 530 MB/s respectively and a 4K random write performance of up to 90,000 IOPS. The drive is also 7mm thin so it can fit in your Ultrabook.
This is officially the first consumer solid state drive from OCZ that is using the new Barefoot 3 controller. This new controller is designed completely in-house by OCZ. OCZ is touting this new drive as the standard for performance users and it offers sequential read and write speeds of 550MB/s and 530MB/s respectively. The Vector is available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB versions and OCZ is backing it with a 5 year warranty. Will this be the drive that saves OCZ and puts them back on track or is the the last ditch effort of a dying company? Time will only tell.
Yesterday at the Intel Developer Forum 2012 OCZ was quietly giving a sneek peek at their new Vector solid state drive. The Vector drive is built on Indilinx’s latest Barefoot 3 controller. This controller is completely built from the ground up by Indilinx (the Barefoot 2 used Marvell technology). Maybe this new controller will fix the single thread issue we saw with drives based on the Barefoot 2 controller. The Vector drive also sports 2x nm MLC NAND, and a SATA 6.0 Gbps interface.
Back in July we took a look at the Vertex 4 solid state drive from OCZ. This was the first consumer solid state drive from OCZ to use the Indilinx Everest 2 controller. Today we are looking at OCZ’s second solid state drive to use that controller, the Agility 4. The Agility 4 features read and write speeds of 420MB/s read and 410MB/s write respectively. Since OCZ has been making solid state drives they have always had the Vertex line and Agility line. The Vertex line was always the high-end enthusiast product, while the Agility was aimed for the mainstream. It is no different here, unlike the Vertex 4 that uses synchronous NAND the Agility 4 uses asynchronous NAND and is much less expensive. Because so many companies are using the same controller the solid state drive market has become saturated with the same type of drives that offer just about the same performance. OCZ wants to remain a big player in the solid state drive market and with their purchase of Indilinx last year they made that very apparent.
