Storage, it always seems like we need more of it, especially with file sizes increasing for media and more importantly games. While some of you may have cases that give you ample space to load them up with hard drives there are others who have small form factor system or even work from a laptop where storage space is limited. There is where external hard drive enclosures come into place. Today we are taking a look at a pretty awesome 4-bay external hard drive enclosure that supports 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA hard drives and has both USB 3.0 and eSATA connections. The enclosure I am talking about is ICY DOCK’s ICYCube MB561U3S-4S. Let’s load it up with drives and see what we can do with it.
French storage giant LaCie teamed up with French silversmith Christofle to produce a limited edition, hand crafted external USB 3.0 storage device called the Sphere. This spherical object weighs a few pounds and houses a 1 TB, bus-powered, 2.5″ hard drive.
It is not often we see announcements regarding external DVD writers. Optical media is much less popular as it was even a few years ago. Well ASUS has a new External DVD writer in their SDRW-08U5S-U. This portable optical drive is the thinnest form factor in its class at 13mm. There is a hidden stand that allows you to have the drive in either horizontal or vertical placement. The drive will be available in Mellow Metallic, Dusty Rose, and Bright Berry color options.
External hard drive enclosures are nothing new, we have seen them since the USB 1.0 days. Now that USB 3.0 is becoming standard on most motherboards and cases we are seeing many USB 3.0 external hard drive enclosures coming out. One such external hard drive enclosure is the Goliath from Hornettek. This is a larger external hard drive enclosure as the name Goliath suggests so it will fit a 3.5-inch hard drive. Let’s check it out and see what is all about.
Seagate’s FreeAgent series has been around for quite some time, this is Seagate’s most popular series of external drives. FreeAgent GoFlex drives have a very cool plug and play design that allows you to change interfaces for the fastest speeds possible. They also come with included software that makes encryption and creating backups very easy. Today we are checking out the larger 2TB USB 3.0 Desk version of the drive. Is this the perfect external drive for you? Let’s check it out and see! Special thanks to Geeks.com for providing us with the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 2TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive to review. Geeks.com is a great place to find external hard drives.
External DVD/CD drives are nothing new, but over the past year they have been becoming a little more popular. This is probably because of the increased sales in netbooks and slim laptops. I do prefer a small, slim notebook to a larger one and honestly I rarely use an optical drive. But there are some things you just need an optical drive for, like OS installs and making audio CD’s. Lite-On has sent us a very slim 8x USB DVD/CD writer to check out, the eNAU608. Let’s take a look and see if it is the perfect drive for your netbook or slim laptop.
Last year we took a look at ASUS’s first external Blu-ray combo drive, the SBC-04D1S-U. It was the perfect external combo drive for a laptop or desktop and received a perfect 10 out of 10 score in our testing. ASUS has updated the SBC-04D1S-U with faster Blu-ray read speeds and a few other features. They are calling this new combo drive the SBC-06D1S-U. Let’s see if ASUS can make this drive any better than the previous drive we tested!
External hard drive enclosures are very common these days, especially with large file sizes of HD movies and other content. A single-drive external hard drive enclosure works for most people, but people who want to protect their data and want faster speeds opt for a dual hard drive enclosure with RAID capabilities. Today we will be looking at one such enclosure from ICY DOCK called the MB662US-2S, which features RAID 0, RAID 1, BIG, and JBOD configurations. Let’s see if this is the perfect external enclosure for you.
Blu-ray devices are slowing becoming more and more popular, especially as prices come down. Many computer users who are looking for a Blu-ray drive can easily find an internal drive for their desktop, but what if they want one for their laptop? How about one that works on both their desktop and laptop? This is where ASUS’s SBC-04D1S-U External Slim Blu-ray Combo Drive comes in. This slim external drive connects to any computer via USB and allows you to play Blu-ray media as well as burn CD’s and DVD’s. Let’s check it out!
External hard drives are everywhere, I currently use 4 with my main rig and 1 with my laptop. I really like using them because they are easy to setup and if you need to transfer large files from one computer to another you can just go ahead and unplug the drive and plug it into the new computer. Today we will be looking at an external drive that gives you more security than most others, the LaCie D2 Safe drive has a fingerprint reader on it so you can securely access files. So if someone decides they want to snatch this off your desk they cannot access your files.
