Seagate today announced it is shipping the world’s first 8 TB hard disk drive. An important step forward in storage, the 8 TB hard disk drive provides scale-out data infrastructures with supersized-capacity, energy-efficiency and the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) in the industry for cloud content, object storage and back-up disaster recovery storage.
It seems not that long ago 6 TB drives were just announced and now they are selling for as low as $300. Seagate is ready with fully functional engineering samples of its 8 TB hard drives and has sent them over to major enterprise (hosting / cloud) customers for reliability testing and feedback. This was revealed in their Q4FY earnings call by CEO Steve Luczo when responding to a question.
