Seagate who we have known for years for their hard drives has been relatively quiet in the solid state drive space. Well it seems that is changing as today they are unveiling a complete solid state drive line, including their first consumer-based solid state drives. The new products include the Seagate 600 SSD, Seagate 600 Pro SSD, Seagate 1200 SSD and Seagate X8 Accelerator.
The flagship consumer drive is the Seagate 600 SSD. This SATA 6GB/s drive will be available in 480GB, 240GB and 120GB capacities and will also be available in 7mm and 5mm versions. This drive is powered by the LAMD Amber LM87800 controller and makes use of either Toshiba or Samsung 19nm MLC NAND. This drive will have sequential read and write speeds of 550 MB/s and 450 MB/s respectively. The 600 Pro SSD is more made for the enterprise. It features the same NAND and controller, but offers extra over-provisioning. These drives are made for read-intensive workloads.
Still in the enterprise side is the 1200 SSD, which is a 12Gb/s SAS drive. This drive will be available in 200GB, 400GB and 800GB models. The drive uses dual 12Gb/s SAS connections, but is backwards compatible with 6Gb/s SAS environments.
Finally we have the Seagate X8 Accelerator, which is a PCI Express drive. This drive is powered by Virident and offers up to 1.1 million IOPS, the X8 Accelerator boosts server performance with ultra-fast speed that is up to 2X faster than the closest competitor and closer to DRAM performance than storage. This drive is available in capacities up to 2.2TB!
