Seagate Testing 8TB Hard Drives with Customers

It seems not that long ago 6 TB drives were just announced and now they are selling for as low as $300. Seagate is ready with fully functional engineering samples of its 8 TB hard drives and has sent them over to major enterprise (hosting / cloud) customers for reliability testing and feedback. This was revealed in their Q4FY earnings call by CEO Steve Luczo when responding to a question.

“We have also delivered 8 terabyte customer development units to major customers and cloud service providers and the initial customer feedback has been very positive,” Luczo said during the call. “While it’s still early in the development of our Kinetic object-based storage platform, we are in deep technical discussions with a very broad-base of enterprise customers. We believe our focus on developing key values for object-based storage will make the Kinetic platform a differentiated offering in the cloud storage marketplace.”

Luczo did not mention what technology or process Seagate is using for these 8TB drives, also a release date or pricing was not released.
