Usage & Testing
I first tested the speaker system as just an iPod speaker system. As I said this system works with any iPod with a dock connector and even your iPhone. Music played perfectly from both my iPod and iPhone. The sound reproduction was great and you could use this system in any room of your house.
Next I hooked up the USB cable to my laptop. I first just though the USB cable was for the iPod dock to sync with iTunes, but actually it not only does that it turns the speakers into a set of USB speakers! So the StudioDock 3i not only is an iPod speaker system, but also a set of USB speakers! When you connect the USB cable to you computer Windows will automatically install the drivers and the speakers will show up as one of your sound devices.
I listened to all types of music on the speaker system and I was very impressed. This system is very comparable to a high-end 2.1 system, minus the subwoofer of course. The 3.25-inch woofer in each speaker does give the system some bass, but it does not compare to having a dedicated woofer.
When listening to music I only had the have the system turned half way up for it to be extremely loud. Even being that loud the music was not distorted at all. This system would definitely work in any room of your house.
Samson has really put together a complete system with the StudioDock 3i. Not only is it an iPod speaker system it is also a very nice USB speaker system that can be used with your desktop computer or laptop. One thing that I was really impressed with was the sound quality, this system sounds better than most 2.1 desktop speaker system’s I’ve tried out. The only thing missing is a dedicated woofer, but many people will not see that as a problem.
You can find the Samson Studio Dock 3i for around $100 online, which is a steal considering the quality of the speakers and they are not just iPod speakers either. Overall ThinkComputers gives the Samson Studio Dock 3i iPod Speaker System a 9 out of 10 score and our Recommended Award.
– Great sound quality
– Works will iPod and iPhone
