Patriot Viper 4 DDR4-3000 16GB Memory Kit Review

Final Thoughts
I think at the end of the day Patriot has put a very great kit together in their Viper 4 series. The kit looks great with its black and red design. Again I do have to point out I would have liked to have seen a black PCB compared to the green, but once you have this kit installed it is barely noticeable. This kit will match up quite well with ASUS’s Republic of Gamers line of motherboards, MSI’s gaming motherboard line and pretty much any motherboard that has black or red on it.

The three-part aluminum heatspreader / heatsink is pretty heavy duty and will have no problem with the thermal load that you put on these modules. While the heatsink does stick up above the modules, it is not overly large so clearance should really not be an issue at all.

When it comes to performance this is one of the fastest kits out there. When DDR4 first came out it was actually hard to find a motherboard that would support 3000 MHz memory. As the platform has matured almost all motherboards support this speed and that is great to see. The way this kit can reach such speeds is that when you enable the XMP 2.0 profile it actually changes the systems base clock from 100 MHz to 125 MHz effectively overclocking the CPU. This might be weird for some, but you can easily make the adjustment with your CPU multiplier or just leave it as is and enjoy the increased system performance.

When it came to overclocking I really was not able to get much more out of this kit. This has pretty much been the case with most DDR4 that is clocked this high, and it all really depends on your motherboard too. That does not take anything away from this kit as it is already clocked quite high. You could try and tighten the timings, but the settings in the XMP 2.0 profile will give you great performance across the board.

Right now this kit is selling for $319.99 at my favorite online retailer, which puts in sort of in the middle of DDR4 kits at the same speed and capacity. Patriot also backs this kit with a lifetime warranty. Overall ThinkComputers gives the Patriot Viper 4 DDR4-3000 16GB Memory Kit a 9 out of 10 score.
