Intel has just announced their 730 Series solid state drives, which are aimed at gamers and enthusiasts. Intel has overclocked the controller on the drive by 50% and the NAND by 20%, which makes it faster than previous drives.
LaCie has just announced the availability of 5 TB, 7200 RPM hard drive capacities in their 5big, 2big and d2 Thunderbolt series. LaCie will deliver 5 TB capacities in single drive systems and up to 25 TB in multiple drive systems.
With Ultrabooks and solid state drives becoming more and more popular we are seeing new notebooks come with smaller capacity hard drives. While this may not be an issue to some, others who need the larger storage capacity end up getting a portable hard drive to take with them. Today we are taking a look at one such drive, the Matsunichi 500GB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive. This drive has a very attractive design to it and is USB 3.0 compatible so transfer speeds should be pretty fast. Let’s take a look…
Seagate is said to be working on a 6TB hard drive, which they plan to roll out around the April-June time frame (Q2). According to the leaked company road maps the drive is likely to be released later in the quarter and could be branded in the new Constellation ES.3 Megalodon series.
2013 was another rough year for OCZ, they went bankrupt and their assets were sold off to Toshiba. We were not sure if we would ever see the OCZ name again, but it looks like OCZ is not going anywhere. With such a popular name know for great performance Toshiba is keeping OCZ around and their first product for 2014 is the Vertex 460 solid state drive. We happen to be taking a look at the 240GB version today. The Vertex 460 features the same Barefoot 3 M10 controller as we saw in the Vertex 450 drive, but has new Toshiba 19nm MLC toggle mode NAND. Now that Toshiba owns OCZ and is loading drives with their own flash this is going to bring costs down for the consumer. The Vertex 460 also really focuses on mixed workload and sustained performance. Will the Vertex 460 start off the year right for OCZ? Read on as we find out!
2014 is going to be a big year for storage as LSI will be releasing their Griffin controller. Mushkin’s latest Helix series of solid state drives will feature this controller and will be released later in 2014.
ADATA will be expanding their solid state drive lines in 2014 and to kick things off they will be introducing the SX930 which will be available in capacities up to 2TB. That is one of the largest capacities that will be offered for a consumer solid state drive!
Over the past year we have seen storage get smaller and smaller, but now ADATA is introducing their XU41 or Mini solid state drive. This is one of the smallest implementations of a full solid state drive that we have seen.
French storage giant LaCie teamed up with French silversmith Christofle to produce a limited edition, hand crafted external USB 3.0 storage device called the Sphere. This spherical object weighs a few pounds and houses a 1 TB, bus-powered, 2.5″ hard drive.
LaCie and designer Constance Guisset designed the Culbuto, a 16 GB USB3 flash drive with a balled end. “Culbuto” means “rolly polly” in French, and is basically the French concept of a Weeble.
