Introduction
There are many companies out there making USB drives, while I was at the CES show, I came across the booth for SmarThumb. Curious as to what it was exactly, I started asking questions and ended up spending about 30 minutes talking with the reps from the company. The parent company is called Intranet Research, based in Malaysia, and they believe they have come up with a 'better', more useful, USB drive. After chatting for a while with them and exchanging info they gave me one of their SmarThumb USB drives to take home and review. The package states: “The World's 1st Productivity Suite on a Portable Flash Drive”. So let's check it out and compare to some others on the market.
I would like to thank Intranet Research/SmarThumb for giving me a sample to review.
First Looks
The packaging is our standard plastic sealed clamshell. It is a bright yellow that is very eye-catching. The drive itself is featured prominently in the center of the package. There is some basic info about the drive listed on the package.
The back of the package lists specs and some info about the applications included.
There is no documentation included with the drive, but if you need it is available on the SmarThumb website and there is a 'help' section on the USB drive itself. Taking it out of the package we can get a better look at it, included with the drive is a small keychain style lanyard. The USB drive itself is regular plastic with a rotating metal housing. On the drive is the capacity (256Mb), and an LED indicator. On the metal housing is the SmarThumb logo.
When rotating the drive it does lock into place in two positions, the half open and fully open position. The LED light up solid green when plugged in and blinks to indicate data transfer/activity.
