Luma is a dual-band wireless router that sits on your home network monitoring wireless and wired traffic to provide statistics, and deep-insight into what users are actually doing. Although, Luma is much more than just another wireless router with monitoring capabilities.
Despite its small form factor, Luma is able to pack in dual-band 802.11ac wireless with speeds up to 1900Mbps, 1 USB 2.0 port, 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports (WAN, LAN), Bluetooth 4.0 with low energy, quad-core processor, and has support for what Luma termed ‘Surround WiFi’. Surround WiFi is a mesh network that supports up to 10 Luma, and it will automatically handle channel selection, power level management, and even band steering. Most of these features are only found on enterprise WiFi installations (Cisco, Meraki, Aerohive) and can cost thousands of dollars. Luma is bringing this awesome enterprise feature into homes ensuring that WiFi access and speed is consistent throughout the entire home.
Luma’s companion app is where the product really comes alive. After scanning the network to find all currently connected devices, Luma will categorize each device and they can be associated with a friend or family member. Once a device is assigned to a person, the companion app can be used to see that device’s current activity, from browsing iOS App Store to playing games on Xbox Live. Other features include time restrictions in the form of daily hour limits or timetable, and easily providing guest access. No longer will guests have to enter a complicated WiFi password, the companion app will manage adding guests, and access can even be revoked at a later time.
Luma is expected to launch Spring 2016. Pre-orders are now available on getluma.com for $99 (single unit), or $249 (three units).
