Final Thoughts

Protecting your data is always something that is important to me and having an external hard drive with on the fly encryption and a fingerprint reader is great. Say someone wants to steal this drive, when they go and plug it into their computer it will not even initialize without the input of an authorized users fingerprint. If that is not great protection I do not know what is!

The nice tough steel design of the enclosure makes the drive look cool and adds protection as well. I really like that this drive has an assortment of connections rather than just USB 2.0. You also get firewire 400 and firewire 800, I’m sure Mac users will love that.

I really haven’t found a single problem with this drive at all. You can get it from Geeks.com refurbished for $129.99. Overall ThinkComputers gives the LaCie D2 Safe 1TB External Hard Drive a 10 out of 10 score.

Pros:

- On the fly encryption
- Fingerprint reader
- Solid design
- Firewire 400 and 800

Cons:

- None that I found

As the capacities of usb drives grows we may see external harddrives become extinct. For example some of the new usb 3.0s that should be coming out soon have capacities of 128gb, all in a much more compact and space saving design.

It'll be a while before that happens because the larger flash drives are quite expensive.

It def. will be a while before it happens, but at the rate we're going, it'll proabbly be here in less than 10 years, so long as usb drives still exist.
