Intel Announces 2nd Generation Thunderbolt Specification

At the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) that is currently underway in Beijing, Intel has announced the second-generation Thunderbolt specification. It uses the same plug and pin design as current Thunderbolt devices, but offers double the bandwidth over its predecessor. This will give devices 20 Gb/s of bandwidth, which gives users the ability to transfer uncompressed 4K Ultra-HD video without causing the display to lag.

The specification is part of the new line of “Falcon Ridge” host controllers that will hit mass production by late 2013 and into early 2014.
