Intel 750 Series 400GB NVMe Solid State Drive Review

Final Thoughts
This review has been a lot of fun, mainly because it gave me the chance to really learn about NVMe. While I knew what it was, I did not know all of the specifics and benefits. It is great being able to test out new technology! With that said I have to say this is one of the most solid (no pun intended), solid state drives that I have tested.

So let’s talk performance, again the drive is rated for 2200 MB/s read and 900 MB/s write. In all of our tests the drive performed up to that specification or higher! In ATTO Disk Benchmark (which is our definitive SSD benchmark) the drive scored 2356 MB/s read and 987 MB/s write. AIDA64’s linear drive benchmarks are great because they actually scan from the first physical section to the last on the drive. Running these tests give us an idea of sustained read / write operations. In AIDA64 the drive had an average speed of 2755.5 MB/s read and 923.3 MB/s read. It is quite clear that the Intel 750 Series is the fastest solid state drive around.

The Intel 750 series really is in a class all its own, remember it is the first NVMe solid state drive, so it is not really fair to compare it to the typical 2.5-inch solid state drives we’ve been reviewing lately. In saying that the Intel 750 series might not be the best storage solution for you if you are just looking for a solid state drive. Most people will likely not even push this drive to take full advantage of it. But if you are doing tasks such as video editing, 3D modeling, video game design, etc this could be a perfect drive for you and could take your work to the next level.

If this drive is any indication of what we are going to see as NVMe gets adopted I am quite excited. We’ve already seen unreleased motherboards with multiple U.2 connectors so we are only going to see the standard grow.

Right now you can pick up the 400 GB Intel 750 Series drive for $384.99, that puts it at just under $1 per GB, which is very aggressive for the type of performance you are going to get with this drive. The 800 GB version comes in at $769.99 and the 1.2 TB version is $1179.99. Intel also backs all three versions of this drive with a 5-year warranty.

Overall ThinkComputers gives the Intel 750 Series 400GB NVMe Solid State Drive a 10 out of 10 score and our Editor’s Choice Award!
