ASUS’s ROG Rampage V Edition 10 is a BEAST!

ASUS is celebrating the 10th anniversary of their Republic of Gamers brand. With that they presented the ROG Rampage V Edition 10 X99 Motherboard at Computex. This by far is ASUS’s most feature heavy motherboard and has things we’ve never seen before on other motherboards!

The board itself has an all black design, but don’t let that fool you, there are actually 5 different RGB lighting zones. There is lighting on the rear I/O and over the SupremeFX audio solution, in the center of the board where it says “Republic of Gamers”, on the PCH heatsink, along the edge of the board and on the PCI-Express locks. This is the first time we’ve seen lighting used there! The board also has RGB headers so you can connect even more lights! With ASUS’s software you can easily control each zone and change colors as you see fit.

ASUS has reinforced the PCI-Express slots with metal reinforcement walls and a hook that is archored to the board. ASUS calls this their SafeSlot design. This will prevent damage of large cards and travel. Talking about PCI-Express slots you have four evenly spaced PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots, perfect for the most high-end graphics card setup.

As far as storage goes you have 10 SATA 6GB/s ports, a 32 Gb/s U.2 port, and 110-mm M.2 slot, which is tucked behind the SATA ports. You have the ability to run both U.2 and M.2 drives simultaneously at 32 Gb/s. You have 8 DDR4 DIMM slots which support up to 128 GB of DDR4 memory.

Like other ASUS boards there is a dedicated header for water cooling pumps, but there is also a new dedicated header for industrial-grade, high-amperage fans favored by some hardcore overclockers. Another interesting thing is that ASUS has made the I/O shield on the rear I/O part of the board itself. This means that you will never forget to install it. Notable features on the rear I/O include four 10 Gbps USB 3.1 ports (2x Type-A / 2x Type-C).

The board actually has two audio solutions. You of course have the on-board audio accessible via the rear I/O, but also there is a separate SupremeFX Hi-Fi DAC which is in the form of a 5.25-inch bay device. The Hi-Fi module is loaded with appropriately high-fidelity components, including an ESS Sabre DAC, multiple op-amps, and a dedicated headphone amp that lets you power high-end cans up to 600Ω. As an added bonus, it puts a slick volume dial within reach alongside a selection of headset jacks.
