ASUS Maximus VI Hero Z87 Motherboard Review

Overclocking
As always with motherboards we see how far we can take them and what overclocking options we have available. Within ASUS’s AI Suite III software we have the option to easily overclock the motherboard directly within Windows. I would suggest this option for beginners.

If you do with to go into the BIOS you can find the section under the Extreme Tweaker menu called CPU Level Up. It will give you different overclocking values based on the installed processor you have. For the i7-4770K it has 4.2 GHz, 4.4 GHz and 4.6 GHz overclocks available. If you select one of these it will automatically overclock your system and set all of the values for you.

If you know what you are doing you can easily go into the BIOS and set all of the values yourself. This is what we did to achieve our stable overclock of 4.7 GHz. I was able to get the system to boot at both 4.8 and 4.9 GHz, but they were not stable and our CPU was quite hot even though we are using a watercooler. The heat is an issue with the chip and has nothing to do with the motherboard. So with our BCLK set at 100, ratio at 47 and our CPU voltage at 1.35v we achieved a stable overclock of 4.7 GHz, which is a 34% overclock.

Not bad, but if the thermals of the chip were better I bet we could go higher!
