Antec AMP SP1 Portable Bluetooth Speaker Review

Usage & Testing
Getting the SP1 setup for any of your devices is extremely easy.  You first want to make sure that it is fully charged.  Antec includes a USB charging cable.  There is a battery LED indicator on the power button to let you know if the SP1 is fully charged or has a low battery.  To pair the SP1 to your device all you have to do is hold the center button on the top of the SP1 for 6-8 seconds then you will see the LED on the side flashing.  You are now in pairing mode.  From there on your device go to the Bluetooth settings and the SP1 should show up.  Select it to connect and you are good to go.  There is no pin number or passcode to connect.

Once connected you can now play music, watch movies and even take phone calls using the SP1.  I have been using the SP1 for about a week now and I really like it.  I have iPod speaker docks in pretty much every room of my house (yes I’m weird like that), but instead of using them I have been using the SP1.  The main reason is because I can put the SP1 wherever I want it.  If I’m cooking in the kitchen I can put it on the shelf above the stove, if I’m in my bedroom I can put it on the nightstand and if I’m in the living room I can put it on the table in the center of the room.  The iPod docks are stationary because they require external power, the SP1 does not.  Also having the SP1 means anyone that has a Bluetooth device can pair that device with the SP1 and listen to music, not just people with iPod / iPhones.

So the SP1 is pretty convenient, but how does it sound?  When I first started listening to music on the SP1 I was presently surprised.  The dual 2-inch drivers really push a lot of air and sound very clear.  I have listened to pretty much every type of music on the SP1 except for country (sorry…) and all music sounds great, but it seems the SP1 was more designed for music with a lot of bass.  I was actually surprised at how much bass this small speaker has!  Although speaker systems with a dedicated subwoofer will sound better.  With that said even music with low bass sounds very clear on the SP1 although when you turn the volume up pretty high things start to get distorted.

I was also very surprised at how loud the SP1 gets.  You will have no problem filling an entire room with sound.  The speaker phone works great on the SP1 as well.  When someone calls you simply hit the center button on the SP1 to take the call.  When I took calls using the SP1 the person on the other line sounded clear and everyone who called me said they could hear me just fine.
